  • About Devan

"Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring."
    — Marilyn Monroe

That's me-all summed up in one handy little quote. I love to have fun, love to make friends, am creative, patient and random.

I am a professional wedding and portrait photographer located in Dallas City, Illinois and serving all surrounding areas including Nauvoo and Carthage, Illinois and Burlington, Keokuk and Fort Madison, Iowa.

It is amazing to be able to have a "job" that you love to do so much. There is no other profession that allows a person to capture the memories and special moments that I do for customers every day. It is my goal to help my clients have fun, look great, and create beautiful, unique images that capture who they really are.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the blog. Here you can find the most up to date information on specials, what I'm up to and view sneak peeks of my newest sessions.

For even more updates you can become my friend on Facebook and follow me on Twitter!

Bid and Win!

There are 2 upcoming opportunities to win a gift certificate to Devan Whitson Photography.

Saturday morning is the annual KKMI-KBUR Radio Auction. They are auctioning off a $750 gift certificate good for any senior session. That is HUGE!

Ready…listen…BID!! The KKMI-KBUR Radio Auction returns on Saturday, March 27th, beginning at 8:00am.

Join us for the KKMI-KBUR Radio Auction, Saturday morning, March 27th on 93.5 KKMI-FM and 1490 KBUR-AM.

Listen as Scott Michael from KKMI and Steve Hexom from KBUR describe a wide variety of items up for bid. Place your bid by calling our operators at 319-752-5402. Then, keep listening as the bids are updated. If necessary, call again to increase your bid. The last bid announced on the air will not necessarily be the winning bid, since bidding calls that are in progress at the sound of the bell to end the round will be entered for the item.

See all the details and all of the items that will be up for auction here.

I have also donated a gift certificate for the silent auction at Diane McVey’s benefit in Ft. Madison on April 18th. Diane’s daughters were both classmates of mine and she is battling stage 4 breast cancer. I encourage everyone to get out there and support her and her family.

Why I Am Lucky

Maybe the website is not quite launched, but it’s almost there. So why am I lucky?

I get to photograph clients like this…and this is the kind of sunset I get to view from my front porch every. single. night. The sunsets are always so different and always so beautiful. There you have it, folks. I don’t think any more words are needed. Have a good night.:)

Big Things Coming!!

You may have noticed that the blog is looking a little…well…messy. It is the middle of the remodel that my entire website has been undergoing. I promise it won’t be mismatchy for much longer. I have been working hard on the new website and am very excited to share it with everyone.

Check back tonight for a whole new look, logo, site and blog. Best of all, all new images! I am so excited about the changes that are taking place and am sure this is going to be the best year ever. Along with the website release I will also be launching my 2011 Senior Model Campaign. I will be looking for kids from Fort Madison, Burlington, Holy Trinity, Keokuk, Illini West, Warsaw, Macomb, Central Lee and all surrounding areas. It is an awesome way to get the senior pictures you’ve been dreaming of along with a lot of cool perks. I seriously have SO much fun with my seniors and would not trade them for the world. I am so ready for more cool locations and looks, so talk to me about your ideas!

Check out my awesome seniors from 2010!

From the Heart

I usually don’t get too emotional on the blog, but I recently had a conversation with a friend that kind of turned into one of those ah-ha moments.

Said friend told me “Anyone can be a photographer, they just need an expensive camera and photoshop.” At first I was appalled at what he had said and quite frankly very upset. I had just spent DAYS traveling and learning how to provide better photos and a better experience for my clients. I cannot even begin to tally the hours I have spent and intend to continue spending learning and growing as an artist-not even going to mention the financial part, just the time. I pour my heart and soul into my photographs.

Then I stopped and thought logically for a second. He was right. Anyone CAN be a photographer. But you know what they can’t be? ME

No one else can be me. My clients choose me for a reason. Each person sees the world differently. You could let 10 photographers loose with the same equipment, the same subjects and come out with 10 completely different images. My eye is constantly scanning for beautiful light, relationships between people, little details, the things you will NEVER want to forget. I want you to remember the moment you first saw your groom on our wedding day, how tiny your baby was at 5 days old and how much fun you had being the center of attention for your senior portraits.

I don’t know about you, but my photos are my most prized possessions. Sure, I have lots of gadgets, love clothing and pretty things for my home, but if I was stripped of everything I owned losing my photos is the only thing that would devastate me. I am sure many of you would agree.

I want to be there to capture these memories for you-through my point of view. You might not realize how beautiful the simplest moment in your life really is. This is why I am a photographer, why I do what I do.

Hello, 2010!

Well, well, well. Another crazy year has come and gone. I just want to take a minute to stop and thank all of my awesome clients and friends for supporting my business. I am able to do what I love because of YOU! Also, seriously sorry for the lack of blogging. Should I make that my New Years resolution?

I will be out of the office January 4th-14th. My husband and I are spending three days in Atlanta, Georgia learning from amazing Liana Lehman. After that, I am headed to Nashville to Imaging USA-a BIG event. Continuing education is SO important to me and both of these conferences are going to be amazing. I will also be spending some time in Des Moines this winter for the Professional Photographers of Iowa Winter Convention.

Check out my booth at the Keokuk Bridal Show on January 31st. I may also be making an appearance at the Quincy Bridal show in February.
