From the Heart

I usually don’t get too emotional on the blog, but I recently had a conversation with a friend that kind of turned into one of those ah-ha moments.

Said friend told me “Anyone can be a photographer, they just need an expensive camera and photoshop.” At first I was appalled at what he had said and quite frankly very upset. I had just spent DAYS traveling and learning how to provide better photos and a better experience for my clients. I cannot even begin to tally the hours I have spent and intend to continue spending learning and growing as an artist-not even going to mention the financial part, just the time. I pour my heart and soul into my photographs.

Then I stopped and thought logically for a second. He was right. Anyone CAN be a photographer. But you know what they can’t be? ME

No one else can be me. My clients choose me for a reason. Each person sees the world differently. You could let 10 photographers loose with the same equipment, the same subjects and come out with 10 completely different images. My eye is constantly scanning for beautiful light, relationships between people, little details, the things you will NEVER want to forget. I want you to remember the moment you first saw your groom on our wedding day, how tiny your baby was at 5 days old and how much fun you had being the center of attention for your senior portraits.

I don’t know about you, but my photos are my most prized possessions. Sure, I have lots of gadgets, love clothing and pretty things for my home, but if I was stripped of everything I owned losing my photos is the only thing that would devastate me. I am sure many of you would agree.

I want to be there to capture these memories for you-through my point of view. You might not realize how beautiful the simplest moment in your life really is. This is why I am a photographer, why I do what I do.

Yes indeed sweetie, you had a TRUE Awha moment. You have a gift. As long as you keep your vision for why you do what you do & continue to learn, grow & mature, what you love doing will become family treasures to pass down to generations to come… (o:

Well said. It is true..anyone can pick up the camera but the work you put in to it is what separates the mice and men. Your work is beautiful and your talent shows.

Hello, 2010!

Well, well, well. Another crazy year has come and gone. I just want to take a minute to stop and thank all of my awesome clients and friends for supporting my business. I am able to do what I love because of YOU! Also, seriously sorry for the lack of blogging. Should I make that my New Years resolution?

I will be out of the office January 4th-14th. My husband and I are spending three days in Atlanta, Georgia learning from amazing Liana Lehman. After that, I am headed to Nashville to Imaging USA-a BIG event. Continuing education is SO important to me and both of these conferences are going to be amazing. I will also be spending some time in Des Moines this winter for the Professional Photographers of Iowa Winter Convention.

Check out my booth at the Keokuk Bridal Show on January 31st. I may also be making an appearance at the Quincy Bridal show in February.

What is coming in 2010?

A Quick Hello

Hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving with their families-Christmas will be here before we know it! I’m up late working (what’s new?) and just wanted to drop in and say hi! I have been so busy photographing seniors, weddings, engagements children and families that I have completely neglected the blog. I promise I will be back with tons to share very soon. The website will also be seeing an overhaul. I will be taking a little break this winter to attend some workshops and conventions and to work on the business side of things. Don’t worry, I will still be making time for appointments-especially newborns! Very exciting things coming in 2010!

Well, I guess a post isn’t a post without pictures! This is just a little bitty bit of what I have been up to!

Traci & Drew, one of my super fun wedding couples for next year. Drew is a firefighter and we did part of their engagement session at the station. You will definitely be seeing more of them!

We shot Cheyenne’s senior session on location at her grandma’s farm. She chose this location because she spent so much time there as a little girl. Check out the awesome shot we got in the ditch! I looove ditches:)

Oh blog, how I neglect you. Sorry, but I have e-mails to answer phone calls to make, errands to run and pictures to edit. I promise I am coming back to you very soon.:)

So, where the heck have I been? Shooting tons! Here are just a few-I have TONS of seniors to blog and it’s goin’ down this week! Yaaay! And you know what else is coming up? RODEO!!! YEEEHAW. Fort Madison isn’t a very big town, but we have a huge pro rodeo every year that brings in tons of people and it is always a blast. I have been working with The Funky Cowgirl to create some awesome stuff for print ads and booth display and it is going to be awesome. I will be there on the 9th to see Jamey Johnson (hubby doesn’t know this yet, but he loves Jamey, so we’re going!) I will definitely be sharing some photos of the booth in all of it’s funky goodness.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to readers of The Burlington Hawkeye for voting me #1 Reader’s Choice for photographer in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Very exciting! I didn’t even know the contest was going on and I got a text today from my mom congratulating me. I love capturing all of your memories, so It really means a lot to me.

Sorry for the overexcited blog post. I have been sick for way too long and I’m pretty sure I’m on waaaaaaaaaay too many meds. LOL. Off to bed. I can’t have a blog post without a photo, so I leave you with this. Yep, I looooove my job! Have a great week everyone!

Devan, as a fellow photographer, I look at this image and go, “Wow! The composition is fabulous. I love how you used strobe but the background is perfectly illuminated by the evening sky. Thank goodness those lights were on, too.” Another side of me says, “MAN! Where were you when I got married!?!?” Great work. I love checking your blog. It gets me inspired to get out there and try new things. Kudos!

Fort Madison Iowa Photographer: Ashley, 2010 Senior (No, this is not a repeat!)

Ashley had so many fun clothes and was a natural in front of the camera. She has one of the those bright, for real smiles. Does that makes sense? What I mean is that when she smiles her whole face lights up and I love it! Makes for beautiful pictures.:)She brought her mom and boyfriend with her to her session and they were definitely a huge help-don’t know how we would have kept all of those clothes together without them. We ran a little bit over and ended up getting some awesome sunset shots at the end of the night. I love love love them.
